How to clean the bundle of germs that is your phone - The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — You’re washing your hands countless times a day to try to ward off the coronavirus.

You should also wash that extension of your hand and breeding ground for germs — your phone. Tests done by scientists show that the virus can live for two to three days on plastic and stainless steel. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends cleaning all “high-touch” surfaces daily, including phones, keyboards and tablet computers.

But cleaning your phone improperly can damage it. You want to avoid getting moisture inside it or scratching the surface. Don’t spray cleaners directly on the phone, don’t dunk it in cleaning solutions, don’t spray it with compressed-air devices used to clean keyboards and avoid rubbing it with abrasive materials.

Instead, start by turning off the phone and unplugging all cables. Your phone shouldn’t be charging as you clean.

You can use Clorox wipes or wipes with 70% alcohol, which you can get at the drugstore, to wipe down your phone. Apple, which has cautioned against using household cleaners on its phones, says to do that “gently.” AT&T has further recommended wringing out disinfectant wipes before using them on a phone.

You can also use soft cloths to clean the phone, like a microfiber cleaning cloth or the cloths used to clean your glasses. Google says you can dip the cloth in soap and water, as long as you’re careful not to get moisture in the phone. AT&T says paper towels work, too. You can spray them with disinfectant. Again, don’t spray the phone itself.

The phone-cleaning step is one of many measures public-health authorities are recommending to try to slow the spread of the virus, which has infected 137,000 people worldwide. More than 5,000 have died. Most patients have only mild or moderate symptoms, but the elderly and people with existing health conditions are particularly vulnerable.

Apple will reportedly release MacBooks with new and improved keyboards soon - The Next Web

Back in November, we heard rumblings Apple was planning on releasing a 13 or 14 inch MacBook Pro with the new scissor keyboard introduced on the 16-inch model. Today Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reaffirmed this rumor, claiming that the new keyboard would arrive on MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models in Q2 of 2020, as reported by MacRumors.

The existing models are using the yucky butterfly switches Apple introduced with the 2015 MacBook, which had a propensity to get gunk stuck under the keys (and in this writer’s opinion, felt positively nasty to type on). It got so bad that Apple began offering a keyboard-specific repair program in April.

Apple is expected to increase the screen size on its smaller MacBook Pro by shrinking the bezels, bringing it up from 13 inches to 14 inches. It made a similar move with the 16-inch MacBook Pro, increasing the screen size from 15 inches. In an unusual move for the company, Apple even made the laptop a little larger to accommodate a bigger battery; hopefully, it does the same for the new 13 -inch model.

On a separate but related note, Kuo does not seem to believe the coronavirus pandemic will significantly affect the production of the new MacBooks; he expects operations at suppliers will improve significantly in late March, helping keep Apple‘s products on track.

It’s not clear exactly when the new laptops will be announced, but at this point, it seems all of Apple‘s laptops will have revamped keyboards by the end of the year.

Apple's WWDC 2020 kicks off in June with an all-new online format - Apple Newsroom

Cupertino, California — Apple today announced it will host its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June. Now in its 31st year, WWDC 2020 will take on an entirely new online format packed with content for consumers, press and developers alike. The online event will be an opportunity for millions of creative and innovative developers to get early access to the future of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS, and engage with Apple engineers as they work to build app experiences that enrich the lives of Apple customers around the globe.

“We are delivering WWDC 2020 this June in an innovative way to millions of developers around the world, bringing the entire developer community together with a new experience,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “The current health situation has required that we create a new WWDC 2020 format that delivers a full program with an online keynote and sessions, offering a great learning experience for our entire developer community, all around the world. We will be sharing all of the details in the weeks ahead.”

“With all of the new products and technologies we’ve been working on, WWDC 2020 is going to be big,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “I look forward to our developers getting their hands on the new code and interacting in entirely new ways with the Apple engineers building the technologies and frameworks that will shape the future across all Apple platforms.”

The WWDC 2020 program will provide Apple’s entire global developer community — which now includes more than 23 million registered developers in more than 155 countries and regions — and the next generation of app developers with the insights and tools needed to turn their ideas into a reality. Additional program information will be shared between now and June by email, in the Apple Developer app and on the Apple Developer website.

Apple also announced it will commit $1 million to local San Jose organizations to offset associated revenue loss as a result of WWDC 2020’s new online format.

The App Store is the world’s safest and most vibrant app marketplace, with over half a billion people visiting each week. It remains the safest place for users to find software and provides developers of all sizes access to customers in 155 countries and regions. Developers have earned over $155 billion since the App Store launched in 2008. With an active installed base of more than 1.5 billion Apple devices, WWDC 2020 will allow developers to learn about the new technologies and frameworks they rely on as they create new app experiences in areas including augmented reality, machine learning, health and fitness, home automation and more.

Windows 10's Your Phone app will let you copy-paste to Samsung devices - Engadget

Chris Velazco/Engadget

Microsoft is working on at least a couple of big features for Windows 10's Your Phone app, and Insider Preview users will be able to test them out after installing the latest test build. One of those features is the ability to copy-paste text and images between a phone and PC -- for this particular iteration, however, the capability will only work between a Samsung Galaxy S20, 20+, S20 Ultra or Z Flip device and a PC that's running Windows 10 version April 10, 2018 or newer.

To activate the feature, a user simply has to toggle it on in Settings. Once it's on, they can copy-paste text and images by using the familiar CTRL+C and CTRL+V commands or by tapping and holding the phone's screen.

Microsoft

In addition, users can now switch off their mobile device's display while using the app's phone screen feature on their PC. Microsoft calls it the "black screen" function, and it kicks in the moment a session is initiated and dismisses itself after it ends. Users can dismiss black screen by pressing the power button, swiping the screen and activating Bixby, as well.

Finally, the Your Phone app now also supports RCS messages for Galaxy S20 users and can see when their messages get marked as "Read." Again, only Insider Preview users in the Fast ring can access these features at the moment -- those who aren't part of the program will have to wait for their wider release.

Microsoft Your Phone now supports cross-platform copy and paste and RCS on the latest Samsung phones - Android Police

Microsoft and Samsung partnered up to bring us an enhanced version of the Your Phone service that connects Android phones with Windows machines. The Korean company promised to add even more exclusive improvements to the syncing utility for the Galaxy S20 and the Z Flip, like cross-platform copy and pasting and RCS support. As part of the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview Build announcement, the partners took the chance to make good of that word.

Cross-platform copy and pasting lets you transfer text and images seamlessly across devices. On your Windows machine, you can use the familiar ctrl + c and ctrl + v keyboard shortcuts or the right-click menu while you can tap and hold on your Samsung phone to make the respective dialog pop up. The feature is available in Your Phone's settings if your PC is running the Windows 10 April 2018 update or higher. It's also only available in "select markets," but unfortunately, Microsoft doesn't state which.

If your carrier supports it, you can now also send and receive RCS messages on your linked Windows PC, provided you use Samsung Messages as your default app. The desktop OS automatically marks messages as read on your phone, so you don't have to swipe away redundant notifications. This RCS relay is exclusive to the Galaxy S20 series and the Windows 10 April 2018 update or higher.

Additionally, the update allows your phone to display a black screen when you're mirroring it to your PC to save power. To view your screen on your handset again, just press the power button, activate Bixby, or swipe over the display. This is supported on any Samsung device capable of screen mirroring.

The features should already be available in the Your Phone app on your Galaxy S20 or Z Flip. If not, make sure you're on the latest production or beta build, which you can get over at APK Mirror. Should you still not be able to get copy and paste to work, you might be in an unsupported region.
