Galaxy Note 20 in development with 128GB of base storage - SamMobile

Samsung has got its first big flagship launch of the year out of the way so the company can now focus on what’s due in the second half of 2020. Fans of the company are already looking forward to the Galaxy Note 20, which might be what Samsung ends up calling the device after it shook up its naming strategy with the Galaxy S20. The company already has the Galaxy Note 20 in development, that’s not going to surprise anybody, but it appears that the company might revert to 128GB of base storage on the upcoming device.

We hear that the SM-N981, one of the models of the Galaxy Note 20, will feature 128GB of base storage. For the sake of comparison, the Galaxy Note 10 5G (N971) featured 256GB of internal storage. The Galaxy Note 10 may feature 256GB of internal storage but it doesn’t have a microSD card slot. It’s only the Galaxy Note 10+ that does. So Samsung may have decided to reduce the amount of internal storage offered on the base model of its next flagship smartphone.

There’s a good chance the Galaxy Note 20 will have a microSD card slot

That obviously bodes well for the presence of a microSD card slot on the Galaxy Note 20 since it would be unwise to limit a flagship smartphone to just 128GB of storage in this day and age. It also wouldn’t make sense because many of the camera upgrades that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy S20 will undoubtedly make their way to the Galaxy Note 20. The handset is going to need a significant amount of space to store large photos and 8K video from the new cameras.

It’s unclear at this point in time if Samsung is going to launch three separate variants of the Galaxy Note 20, particularly if it wants to accommodate everything that the Galaxy S20 Ultra offers into the Galaxy Note 20 lineup. It’s safe to assume that there will at least be two which will succeed the Galaxy Note 10 and the Galaxy Note 10+. We expect to have more clarity on the Galaxy Note 20 lineup in the coming days. There will obviously be many leaks before the handset is due to arrive. If history is any indication, the Galaxy Note 20 lineup should be announced around August this year.

How to display the Samsung Galaxy S20, Plus and Ultra battery percentage number - PhoneArena

Now that Samsung's new Galaxy S20, S20+ 5G and Ultra have started shipping to impatient early adopters, it's time to preview what do phones can do out of the box, and what needs a little bit of work on your part.

After showing you how to turn on the Galaxy S20 edge notification lighting, or to use the new Quick share fast file transfer, how do you turn on the battery percentage so you can clearly see exactly how much juice you have left?

From the box, the Galaxy S20, Plus or Ultra only show an icon with the battery so you only get a rough idea about the battery levels, but not an exact number. It's easy to fix that and add an exact percentage number for easier glancing.

Here's how to show the battery percentage in Samsung's Galaxy S20, Plus or Ultra notification bar:

1. Tap on the Settings app icon, or the cogwheel at the top of the pull-down status bar.

2. Type "battery percentage" in the Settings menu top search bar, or go to Settings > Notifications > Status Bar.

3. Turn on the "Show battery percentage" slider in the Status bar menu and enjoy your new Galaxy S20 icon.

Unfortunately, there is no way to place the percentage left inside the battery icon itself as Samsung's Good Lock app allows you to do, but that's probably for the best, as the numbers would be too small to view comfortably.

Microsoft finally shows off the new Windows 10 Start menu - TechRadar India

There have been plenty of rumors and leaks recently about Microsoft overhauling the iconic Start menu of Windows 10, and now the company has officially shown off what it’s been working on.

During the Windows Insider podcast, Microsoft announced the changes it was making to the Start menu, which has been designed to “visually differentiate the Start menu from something that’s chaotic color to something that’s more uniform.”

Essentially, it seems like Microsoft has deemed the current Windows 10 Start menu to be too busy, so it’s going for a more understated look that’s more simple to use, and will make finding apps easier.

One of the biggest changes to the Windows 10 Start menu will be to Live Tiles. These have been included with Windows 10 since the start, and are animated app icons that provide extra information depending on the app they represent. While useful on mobile device with limited screen space (such as smartphones, as Live Tiles originated in the doomed Windows Phone operating system), they made the Start menu of Windows 10 look cluttered and confusing.

Not that many apps use Live Tiles any more, which led to rumors that Microsoft was preparing to ditch them altogether.

From what Microsoft has now shown of the new Windows 10 Start menu, it seems that Live Tiles will be replaced with static icons that use Microsoft’s new Fluent Design style.

However, Microsoft was keen to point out that Live Tiles are not getting killed off (yet), and that “those that enjoy their Live Tiles will continue to be able to do so.”

Familiar looking

While Microsoft appears to be keeping Live Tiles for now, albeit in a very pared-back form, their days may still be numbered.

According to The Verge, Microsoft hasn’t made its mind up on what to do with Live Tiles just yet, and will be keeping an eye on feedback from people using Windows 10X, the dual-screen version of Windows 10, which has a Start menu that doesn’t feature Live Tiles.

Other than that, it seems the upcoming Start menu will look quite similar to the existing one, but anything Microsoft does to make the Start menu less cluttered and easier to use is a good move in our view.

We’re not sure when the new Start menu will appear in Windows 10, but it’s probably too late for it to be included in the upcoming Windows 10 20H1 (also known as Windows 10 2004) update.

WhatsApp dark mode now available for iOS and Android - The Verge

WhatsApp is finally getting a new dark mode on iOS and Android today. After months of beta testing on both mobile operating systems, the WhatsApp dark mode will be available for all users today. If you already have dark mode enabled at the system level on iOS 13 or Android 10, then WhatsApp will automatically switch over. Android 9 users can simply enable a new dark theme in the WhatsApp settings menu.

Facebook has tweaked its WhatsApp dark mode to ensure it lowers the brightness of a phone display. “During testing we found that combining pure black and white creates high contrast that can lead to eye fatigue,” explains a WhatsApp spokesperson. “So instead, you’ll notice a special dark gray background and off-white color that lowers the brightness of the screen, cuts down the glare, and improves contrast and readability.”

The WhatsApp dark theme will be mostly pure black on iOS devices and a darker gray on Android. It’s a long-awaited feature, one that WhatsApp acknowledges in a launch video (above) with lots of people squinting into their phones. The short video, entitled “Hello Darkness,” includes a previously unreleased version of “The Sound of Silence” by Paul Simon.

You can download the latest WhatsApp update from Apple’s App Store or the Google Play Store to get the new dark mode option.

Google's Pixel phones now have an iPhone-like 3D Touch feature - Android Central

It seems that Google is introducing a former hardware feature iPhone to Pixel phones via the March 2020 software update. Pixel users will be getting a 3D Touch like option for accessing quick menus rather the using the current long-press option.

The Verge was able to get a response from Google as to why it's moving to hard-press instead of long-press:

Long Press currently works in a select set of apps and system user interfaces such as the app Launcher, Photos, and Drive. This update accelerates the press to bring up more options faster. We also plan to expand its applications to more first party apps in the near future.

When Apple introduced 3D Touch on the iPhone, it was done using hardware to detect pressure and how hard you were pressing. Various levels of pressure would then enact different menus or options for an app. Google has offered a version of this, but it has been done via press duration. Now, it seems, Google is doing what it do best and using software to achieve similar pressure results.

Using existing hardware and machine learning algorithms, the capacitive sensors on the display can determine if you are pressing lightly or more firmly because more of your fingertip is registered. So if you lightly tap the screen to launch an app, only a small amount of your finger touches. However, if you press harder and really smush your finger onto the display, more of your fingertip is registered on the sensors.

So, what do you think of this change to long-press actions? Are you ready to smush you Pixel?

Using software to bring hardware to life

Pixel phones may not have the most RAM or highest megapixel cameras, but they do have some amazing software chops. Those software tweaks that only Google can do give Pixel devices features like Night Sight, Now Playing, and so much more.

Apple Working on Six Mini-LED Products Including New 14.1-Inch MacBook Pro and Refreshed iMac Pro - MacRumors

Apple has six mini-LED products in the works that are set to debut in 2020 and 2021, and production is not expected to be delayed by the coronavirus, according to a new note to investors sent out this morning by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Apple is developing a 12.9-inch iPad Pro, a 27-inch iMac Pro, a 14.1-inch MacBook Pro, a 16-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌, a 10.2.-inch iPad, and a 7.9-inch ‌iPad‌ mini. Kuo does not provide specific launch dates for the items with the exception of the ‌iMac Pro‌, which he says will launch in the fourth quarter of 2020, and the 7.9-inch ‌iPad‌ mini, which he says will launch in 2020.

The product research and development for mini LED remain unaffected by the COVID-19. The visibility for commercialization has even exceeded the expectations in our previous report.

The trend for Apple’s development and promotion of mini LED are more identifiable in five years. We predict that Apple is currently developing six mini-LED-support products (vs. the previous report of only two products), including a 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌, a 27-inch ‌iMac Pro‌ in 4Q20, a 14.1-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ (upgraded from 13.3-inch), a 16-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌, a 10.2-inch ‌iPad‌, and a 7.9-inch ‌iPad‌ mini in 2020.

Of particular interest in Kuo's note is the mention of the 14.1-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌, as this is the first indication that we've had that Apple is planning a new size for its smaller ‌MacBook Pro‌ offering. The 14.1-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ will be sold alongside a refreshed 16-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌. The mention of an ‌iMac Pro‌ is also notable as Apple has not refreshed its ‌iMac Pro‌ since it launched in 2017.

According to Kuo, Apple's mini-LED products are expected to come out in 2020 and 2021, but in previous notes, Kuo has said we can expect to see the 16-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ with a mini-LED display in the fourth quarter of 2020, so that could also be when the 14.1-inch version will launch.

Kuo has also said that the mini-LED version of 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌, which is expected to be a high-end option, will launch in the fall of 2020. Current rumors indicate that this fall 12.9-inch model will come after a spring refresh of other ‌iPad Pro‌ models.
