Microsoft finally shows off the new Windows 10 Start menu - TechRadar India

There have been plenty of rumors and leaks recently about Microsoft overhauling the iconic Start menu of Windows 10, and now the company has officially shown off what it’s been working on.

During the Windows Insider podcast, Microsoft announced the changes it was making to the Start menu, which has been designed to “visually differentiate the Start menu from something that’s chaotic color to something that’s more uniform.”

Essentially, it seems like Microsoft has deemed the current Windows 10 Start menu to be too busy, so it’s going for a more understated look that’s more simple to use, and will make finding apps easier.

One of the biggest changes to the Windows 10 Start menu will be to Live Tiles. These have been included with Windows 10 since the start, and are animated app icons that provide extra information depending on the app they represent. While useful on mobile device with limited screen space (such as smartphones, as Live Tiles originated in the doomed Windows Phone operating system), they made the Start menu of Windows 10 look cluttered and confusing.

Not that many apps use Live Tiles any more, which led to rumors that Microsoft was preparing to ditch them altogether.

From what Microsoft has now shown of the new Windows 10 Start menu, it seems that Live Tiles will be replaced with static icons that use Microsoft’s new Fluent Design style.

However, Microsoft was keen to point out that Live Tiles are not getting killed off (yet), and that “those that enjoy their Live Tiles will continue to be able to do so.”

Familiar looking

While Microsoft appears to be keeping Live Tiles for now, albeit in a very pared-back form, their days may still be numbered.

According to The Verge, Microsoft hasn’t made its mind up on what to do with Live Tiles just yet, and will be keeping an eye on feedback from people using Windows 10X, the dual-screen version of Windows 10, which has a Start menu that doesn’t feature Live Tiles.

Other than that, it seems the upcoming Start menu will look quite similar to the existing one, but anything Microsoft does to make the Start menu less cluttered and easier to use is a good move in our view.

We’re not sure when the new Start menu will appear in Windows 10, but it’s probably too late for it to be included in the upcoming Windows 10 20H1 (also known as Windows 10 2004) update.

WhatsApp dark mode now available for iOS and Android - The Verge

WhatsApp is finally getting a new dark mode on iOS and Android today. After months of beta testing on both mobile operating systems, the WhatsApp dark mode will be available for all users today. If you already have dark mode enabled at the system level on iOS 13 or Android 10, then WhatsApp will automatically switch over. Android 9 users can simply enable a new dark theme in the WhatsApp settings menu.

Facebook has tweaked its WhatsApp dark mode to ensure it lowers the brightness of a phone display. “During testing we found that combining pure black and white creates high contrast that can lead to eye fatigue,” explains a WhatsApp spokesperson. “So instead, you’ll notice a special dark gray background and off-white color that lowers the brightness of the screen, cuts down the glare, and improves contrast and readability.”

The WhatsApp dark theme will be mostly pure black on iOS devices and a darker gray on Android. It’s a long-awaited feature, one that WhatsApp acknowledges in a launch video (above) with lots of people squinting into their phones. The short video, entitled “Hello Darkness,” includes a previously unreleased version of “The Sound of Silence” by Paul Simon.

You can download the latest WhatsApp update from Apple’s App Store or the Google Play Store to get the new dark mode option.

Google's Pixel phones now have an iPhone-like 3D Touch feature - Android Central

It seems that Google is introducing a former hardware feature iPhone to Pixel phones via the March 2020 software update. Pixel users will be getting a 3D Touch like option for accessing quick menus rather the using the current long-press option.

The Verge was able to get a response from Google as to why it's moving to hard-press instead of long-press:

Long Press currently works in a select set of apps and system user interfaces such as the app Launcher, Photos, and Drive. This update accelerates the press to bring up more options faster. We also plan to expand its applications to more first party apps in the near future.

When Apple introduced 3D Touch on the iPhone, it was done using hardware to detect pressure and how hard you were pressing. Various levels of pressure would then enact different menus or options for an app. Google has offered a version of this, but it has been done via press duration. Now, it seems, Google is doing what it do best and using software to achieve similar pressure results.

Using existing hardware and machine learning algorithms, the capacitive sensors on the display can determine if you are pressing lightly or more firmly because more of your fingertip is registered. So if you lightly tap the screen to launch an app, only a small amount of your finger touches. However, if you press harder and really smush your finger onto the display, more of your fingertip is registered on the sensors.

So, what do you think of this change to long-press actions? Are you ready to smush you Pixel?

Using software to bring hardware to life

Pixel phones may not have the most RAM or highest megapixel cameras, but they do have some amazing software chops. Those software tweaks that only Google can do give Pixel devices features like Night Sight, Now Playing, and so much more.

Apple Working on Six Mini-LED Products Including New 14.1-Inch MacBook Pro and Refreshed iMac Pro - MacRumors

Apple has six mini-LED products in the works that are set to debut in 2020 and 2021, and production is not expected to be delayed by the coronavirus, according to a new note to investors sent out this morning by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Apple is developing a 12.9-inch iPad Pro, a 27-inch iMac Pro, a 14.1-inch MacBook Pro, a 16-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌, a 10.2.-inch iPad, and a 7.9-inch ‌iPad‌ mini. Kuo does not provide specific launch dates for the items with the exception of the ‌iMac Pro‌, which he says will launch in the fourth quarter of 2020, and the 7.9-inch ‌iPad‌ mini, which he says will launch in 2020.

The product research and development for mini LED remain unaffected by the COVID-19. The visibility for commercialization has even exceeded the expectations in our previous report.

The trend for Apple’s development and promotion of mini LED are more identifiable in five years. We predict that Apple is currently developing six mini-LED-support products (vs. the previous report of only two products), including a 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌, a 27-inch ‌iMac Pro‌ in 4Q20, a 14.1-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ (upgraded from 13.3-inch), a 16-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌, a 10.2-inch ‌iPad‌, and a 7.9-inch ‌iPad‌ mini in 2020.

Of particular interest in Kuo's note is the mention of the 14.1-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌, as this is the first indication that we've had that Apple is planning a new size for its smaller ‌MacBook Pro‌ offering. The 14.1-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ will be sold alongside a refreshed 16-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌. The mention of an ‌iMac Pro‌ is also notable as Apple has not refreshed its ‌iMac Pro‌ since it launched in 2017.

According to Kuo, Apple's mini-LED products are expected to come out in 2020 and 2021, but in previous notes, Kuo has said we can expect to see the 16-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ with a mini-LED display in the fourth quarter of 2020, so that could also be when the 14.1-inch version will launch.

Kuo has also said that the mini-LED version of 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌, which is expected to be a high-end option, will launch in the fall of 2020. Current rumors indicate that this fall 12.9-inch model will come after a spring refresh of other ‌iPad Pro‌ models.

You can get two Google Nest Mini speakers for the price of one - The Verge

Google’s Nest Mini smart speaker usually costs $50, but Daily Steals is offering an exclusive deal to Verge readers that bundles two speakers for about the same price. Just put in the offer code VERGEGNST at checkout. You have a choice of colors, including sky blue, chalk, charcoal, or coral.

This model looks identical to the Home Mini, but it’s different in a few key ways, per The Verge’s review: it sounds better than the predecessor, it can be easily mounted to your wall, and its controls are much easier to use, thanks to LEDs illuminating the way around the speaker’s various functions.

It’s been a while since there’s been a price drop worth talking about on SanDisk’s 400GB microSD card. But there’s good reason to talk about today’s deal at Amazon on that card, as it’s down to $45 (regularly around $60). If you own a Nintendo Switch or have any other kind of tech that supports microSD for expandable storage, this is will give you a huge capacity boost without breaking the bank.

Panasonic Eneloop rechargeable AA batteries are usually a little pricey, but an eight-pack of batteries is down to $16 at Amazon (via Slickdeals). That’s a great deal for these batteries, which are highly rated on Amazon and have been good at holding a charge in my experience.

ravpower

Lastly, we’ve partnered with RavPower to offer Verge readers discounts on a few capable GaN USB-C wall chargers. They’re already at their lowest price, and these offer codes further reduce the cost.

The first product is RavPower’s 45W USB-C wall charger that sits flush with your wall or at least more flush than most other models. The USB-C port is on its bottom, so it fits the bill if you want a slimline charger that doesn’t require a lot of horizontal clearance. Normally $36, it’s just $19 at Amazon with the offer code VERGE001 at checkout.

If you want more power (enough to recharge the MacBook Air or the 13-inch MacBook Pro), RavPower’s 61W GaN USB-C wall charger is the better option for you. It doesn’t have the slimline design of the 45W model, but it’s still surprisingly tiny. It’s also cheaper today: instead of paying $36, you can get it for $24 with the offer code VERGE61W used at Amazon.

Samsung’s update policy for the Galaxy S20 and Z Flip is unchanged - SamMobile

We’ve been getting a lot of questions lately as to what firmware update schedule the Galaxy S20 series and the Galaxy Z Flip will follow. How many major Android OS updates will these devices receive, and how will Samsung treat security patches moving forward? The answer, at least so far, is that nothing will change. Both the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Z Flip will be subjected to the same update schedule as the other flagship models that came before them.

Unless Samsung decides to change the way it distributes firmware updates, the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Z Flip will remain eligible for no more than two major Android OS updates. They should both get Android 11 and 12 in the future, all the while continuing to receive regular monthly security patches for three years, and quarterly security patches throughout their fourth year on the market.

Samsung recently added the Galaxy S20 series and Galaxy Z Flip to its list of devices eligible for monthly security updates, so in other words, it is business as usual.

As for future Android OS iterations, the Galaxy Z Flip costs a pretty penny and the Galaxy S20, especially the Galaxy S20 Ultra, is as premium as it can get in today’s mobile market. With prices of over $1,000, it’s not outlandish for prospective buyers to expect these smartphones to receive more than two major Android OS updates. We understand why you might want to ask if Samsung has changed its update policy as its premium price ceiling has been constantly pushed higher in recent years, but so far, it looks like there are no plans for better software support for these new flagships.

Nevertheless, the company should really consider extending its update window, at the very least, for its most expensive Galaxy phones. It would certainly be an incentive for a lot of people to join the Galaxy ecosystem, knowing that their expensive flagships won’t stop receiving major updates two years down the line. And it would help in further justifying the premium prices commanded by Samsung for some of its handsets.

We’ll keep you up to speed in case there will be any new developments in this area, but don’t hold your breath.
