Preorders for Samsung's latest flagship phones, which include the Galaxy S20, S20 Plus and S20 Ultra, begin Friday, Feb. 21, and last through March 5. The company first announced the devices earlier this month at Samsung Unpacked (where it also announced the Galaxy Z Flip foldable phone), and the handsets themselves are big, powerful and ultra luxe. The phones share high-end hardware and have new features that signal the direction of where phones are heading -- namely 5G connectivity (which all three phones have) and screens with a higher, 120Hz refresh rate.

But the phones have key differences among each other as well. The 6.2-inch Galaxy S20 is the smallest of the bunch, followed by the S20 Plus and the S20 Ultra, which has a 6.9-inch display. In addition, the Galaxy S20 and S20 Plus both have a wide-angle, telephoto and ultrawide cameras, but the S20 Plus and the S20 Ultra have one extra camera. This fourth one is a time-of-flight camera that measures depth for AR applications. Because the phones belong to Samsung's marquee line, they're expensive. The S20, S20 Plus and S20 Ultra start at $999, $1,199 and $1,399, respectively. (They're £799, £999, £1,199 in the UK and AU$1,349, AU$1,499 and AU$1,999 in Australia.)

Now playing: Watch this: Hands-on with the Galaxy S20, S20 Plus and S20 Ultra

3:36

As well as 5G and the higher refresh rates, the Galaxy S20 devices can hold more expandable storage compared to last year's Galaxy S10 line, they shoot 8K video (rather than just 4K) and they run Samsung's second generation of its One UI out of the box.

For more on how the Galaxy S20 and S10 phones vary, check out the spec comparison chart below. And check out CNET's Galaxy S20 hands-on and our guide on how to preorder the Galaxy S20 too. (Note the prices for the S10 and S10 Plus are as they were at launch, not today.)

LG V60 ThinQ shown off in leaked press render - The Verge

A press render claiming to be LG’s unannounced V60 ThinQ has been published by Android Headlines, showing a handset with a small teardrop notch, a dedicated Google Assistant button, and a gold frame. Although not confirmed by the leak, the phone was expected to be announced at the now-cancelled Mobile World Congress. Text on the phone’s display reads February 24th, the day MWC 2020 was originally scheduled to begin.

Although the image doesn’t show the rear of the device, a previous leak suggested that the LG V60 ThinQ will be equipped with a quad-camera array, four microphones, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, making LG one of the few manufacturers to still offer it on a flagship device (LG does love a good DAC). The leak also claimed the phone will have a 5,000mAh battery, up from the 4,000mAh battery found in last year’s 5G-ready LG V50 ThinQ. Separate leaks have claimed the Android 10 phone will be powered by a Snapdragon 865 processor and 8GB of RAM.

There’s no sign of LG’s dual-screen accessory for the V60 ThinQ, which Yonhap reported in December would be announced at MWC. LG announced a similar accessory with its previous G8X handset, which could be used to give you enough screen real estate to do two things on the device, such as watching YouTube on one screen while browsing the web on the other.

With MWC now cancelled, it’s unclear when LG might announce its V60 ThinQ, or when the phone might be released. When LG initially withdrew from the trade show, it said that it would be “holding separate events in the near future to announce its 2020 mobile products.” With the device presumably ready for a late February reveal, these “separate events” can’t be too far away.

Finally, customers can get up to $200 in Samsung.com credit when they buy a Galaxy S20 series phone.

More details on these three deals can be found here.

T-Mobile stores will have the S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra starting on March 6th. We have seen pre-order customers receive their new Samsung phones a few days ahead of the official launch date in the past, and while there’s no guarantee that that’ll be the case this time around, it is definitely a possibility.

Google testing double-tap gesture on rear of Pixel phones - Android Authority

Google could soon let you do double-tap gestures on the back of Pixel phones.

Google already offers fingerprint gestures on its older Pixel phones and Motion Sense gestures on its Pixel 4 series. But it looks like the firm is testing another gesture-related feature on its Pixel series.

XDA-Developers has spotted and enabled a new gesture system code-named “Columbus” in the Android 11 developer preview for Pixel phones. The system allows you to make a double-tap gesture on the back of a Pixel phone to control various functions.

According to the outlet, the double-tap gesture allows you to dismiss timers, snooze alarms, launch the camera/Google Assistant, play or pause media, collapse the status bar, silence incoming calls, unpin notifications, and start a “user selected action.” Check out a GIF of the feature below, courtesy of XDA.

Google is apparently implementing several measures to prevent accidental activation of the feature, taking charging status and other factors into account. The outlet also noted a reference to gesture training associated with the Settings app, suggesting a setup process for the feature.

Best of all, the double-tap gesture is confirmed to work on older Pixels in addition to the Pixel 4 series. So Google is likely using the accelerometer and gyroscope to enable this feature rather than exotic hardware like Motion Sense. This theoretically means Google could bring the finished feature to other Android phones in general, but it’s probably a Pixel-exclusive capability for now.

We’re glad to see another shortcut system come to Android phones in any event, following in the footsteps of fingerprint scanner gestures, Active Edge squeezes, and the standard hardware button (e.g. Google Assistant key). But we hope Google follows through with allowing users to remap the feature.

[Update: On sale tonight] Where to pre-order the Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra in the US - 9to5Google

While the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip went on sale shortly after the Galaxy Unpacked event, pre-orders for the Galaxy S20 were spaced out by a few weeks. As a reward for the patient, here are the many, many ways to pre-order the Samsung Galaxy S20 & S20+, and the best deals for each of them.

Where to pre-order the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra

As the Samsung Galaxy series has become the definitive Android smartphone and the biggest competitor to Apple’s iPhones, you can buy them just about anywhere. These days, the best way to buy is unlocked, but the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra are also available to pre-order from nearly all major carriers.

Generally speaking, the Galaxy S20 has a starting price of $999, while the larger S20+ goes for $1,199. Meanwhile, in a Samsung first, the S20+ is not the premier model, with the company now offering the ultra-premium Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. Having the best of the best, however, will cost you a massive $1,399.

Last year, those who pre-ordered the Galaxy S10 were entreated to a set of the true wireless Galaxy Buds that were announced side-by-side. Similarly, the Galaxy Buds+ were announced at the 2020 Galaxy Unpacked event, but instead of including them as a bonus, Samsung is offering a good chunk of credit toward the accessory or anything of your choosing from the Samsung shop.

  • Galaxy S20: $100 credit
  • Galaxy S20+: $150 credit
  • Galaxy S20 Ultra: $200 credit

All of that said, pre-orders don’t officially open for the Galaxy S20 series until midnight Eastern time on February 21.

Samsung Galaxy S20/S20+ unlocked

For the most part, buying unlocked is the best way to get a smartphone these days, but this isn’t always true for Samsung phones. Sometimes carrier-based Galaxy phones receive updates faster than their unlocked alternative, but not being tied to one carrier is a good feeling.

On that note, the 5G capabilities of the Galaxy S20 series are not limited to any one carrier’s iteration of 5G, regardless of where you buy. (A small caveat to this is that unlike the S20+ and S20 Ultra, the base model S20 does not support the mmWave 5G band.)

If you plan on trading a device to Samsung or Best Buy, you can receive as much as $700 in trade-in credit to put toward your Galaxy S20 purchase. Best Buy also has the Galaxy S20 in the gorgeous exclusive shade of Aura Blue.

Verizon Wireless Samsung Galaxy S20/S20+ pricing, pre-order perks

As the lowest Galaxy S20 model does not support mmWave 5G, Verizon is only carrying the Galaxy S20+ and S20 Ultra. If you simply must buy your phone through a carrier, Verizon is the one to pick, offering the most unique deals.

If you’re buying a Galaxy S20+ or S20 Ultra and are willing to start a new line, Verizon will give you a massive $1050 toward a second Samsung Galaxy S20 series phone. Similarly, existing Verizon Unlimited customers can take an extra $300 off with trade in. Otherwise, all Verizon customers will get a $150 in bill credit over two years (roughly $6.25 per month). Of course, all of these Verizon deals still stack with the up to $200 Samsung Shop credit above.

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S20/S20+ pricing, pre-order perks

Coinciding with the launch of the Galaxy S20, the first truly mainstream 5G phone, AT&T has announced the next 13 markets to receive its 5G service. The carrier is offering up the Galaxy S20 for $33.34 per month, S20+ for $40/month, and the S20 Ultra for $46.67/month, for 30 months.

Or, if you port in an existing number for a new 5G-ready AT&T Unlimited Extra or Unlimited Elite plan, you can get the base Galaxy S20 for free or the Galaxy S20+ for just $200. Sadly this deal does not apply for the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.

T-Mobile/Sprint Samsung Galaxy S20/S20+ pricing, pre-order perks

With the T-Mobile/Sprint merger growing ever closer to completing, you may want to consider pre-ordering your Galaxy S20 from either of the two carriers. T-Mobile customers can pre-order the Galaxy S20 or the lower model of S20+ for $0 down with a monthly price of $41.67 or $50, respectively. Higher models require a down payment, with the 512GB Galaxy S20 Ultra needing $199.99 down and $58.34 per month.

As for deals, T-Mobile will give you $500 off with a qualifying trade-in. And, if you add a line, T-Mobile will give you a full $1000 off a second Samsung Galaxy S10, S20 or Note 10 phone.

More excitingly, Sprint will let new customers purchase the Samsung Galaxy S20 for $0/month with trade-in of a Galaxy S8 or newer.

Samsung Galaxy S20/S20+ pricing, pre-order perks at other carriers

If you’re looking for an alternative carrier from which to pick up the Galaxy S20, there are a few others to choose from outside of the big three.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons: 11 things we learned about the Switch game - The Verge

The vibe around Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a lot less secretive now. This morning, Nintendo showed off a lengthy presentation that provided plenty of details about the latest title in its adorable life sim series, which is making its debut on the Switch on March 20th. That includes everything from the structure of the game to the multiplayer aspect and your new virtual smartphone. There was a lot packed into the 25-minute-long presentation. But if you weren’t able to catch the whole thing, here are the highlights.

The island is fairly empty in the beginning

The Animal Crossing series isn’t exactly known for its bustling metropolises, but the island in New Horizons will be quiet even by Animal Crossing standards — at least initially. When you first boot up the game, you and two other residents will set up camp on a previously deserted island. Aside from nature and your tents, the only other facilities initially will be the airport where you can access multiplayer features, and Tom Nook’s facility where you buy and sell items, as well as craft new ones.

But that doesn’t mean it will stay that way for long. Nintendo says that new residents will eventually join and, more importantly, you’ll slowly unlock major facilities as well. That includes series mainstays like the museum, general store, tailer, and more. Similarly, you’ll also get access to a proper house after paying off your loan. It’s not clear how or when these will eventually unlock, but it sounds like New Horizons will be a very slow burn.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

You’ll have a smartphone full of apps

Like many modern games, the main menu in New Horizons takes the form of a smartphone, or NookPhone as it’s called in the game. The phone is naturally full of apps, each one corresponding to a specific aspect of the game. There’s an app for the in-game map, for instance, and another that collects all of your crafting recipes. (It’s not clear how you get such good reception on an island in the middle of nowhere.) Most notably is an app called Nook Miles, which ties into the next major feature...

There’s a new progression system

Without trying to sound too crass, Animal Crossing has always been about money to some degree. You move into a town, and you’re then immediately saddled with debt that you have to work to pay off. (Of course, there’s no interest, so you’re free to not pay it at all if you want.) New Horizons goes in a slightly different direction, one that changes the structure of the game.

The Nook Miles app is essentially a collection of quests. When you do things like catch a certain number of fish or collect a specific amount of twigs, you’ll earn miles that go toward paying off your travel package. From what Nintendo has shown, it looks like the goals will all be tied to things you do in the game anyway, making it a fairly natural progression system. However, it’s not clear if these miles can also be used to pay off future house upgrades, though you can also use them to visit mystery islands and unlock new gear.

Familiar characters are back

Yes, Isabelle is in the game — eventually. The adorable Shih Tzu has become a mascot for the series, and she’ll be part of New Horizons when players eventually unlock the resident services office. Other notable characters will also be making an appearance. Gulliver, for instance, will wash up on shore at some point. And traveling merchants like Kicks will visit from time to time.

There are different multiplayer options

One of the most unclear aspects of New Horizons was its multiplayer options, and Nintendo provided a bit more detail in that regard. For local play, up to eight people can have characters on the same Switch. They’ll all have to live on the same island — each player will get their own tent / house — and you can have one character per user account. There’s also a four-player “party” mode where four players can run around at the same time.

When it comes to online play, you’ll be able to visit friends and have them visit your island. A new “party play” feature lets up to four players visit the same space online. But there are some restrictions. You’ll need an island code to visit other players, and to prevent griefing, axes and shovels are banned so that you can’t chop down every single tree on someone else’s island. (These restrictions are lifted if you and the other person are considered “best friends,” though it’s not clear right now how that distinction is made.)

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Voice and text chat require a separate app

If you want to actually talk to friends, you’ll need to do so via a separate smartphone app. The Nintendo Switch Online mobile app is being updated to support New Horizons, and it’s required for both voice and text chat in the game. The app will also let you scan QR codes to import pattern designs from past Animal Crossing games. The update is expected later in March after New Horizons launches.

There are no cloud saves

Much like other big Nintendo franchises like Pokémon and Splatoon, the new Animal Crossing won’t support cloud saves via the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service. The reasoning isn’t clear, though Nintendo does say that it’s planning some kind of recovery service for those who lose their game file due to lost or damaged consoles.

You can shape the island itself

New Horizons will give you more control over nature than any of its predecessors. Not only can you pull weeds and chop down trees, you’ll also be able to demolish cliffs, create pathways across rivers, and even build stairs and bridges. Like most other features, this won’t be available right away, but it looks like it will give creative players plenty more options for customizing their island.

There will be connections to Pocket Camp

For those who have stuck with the mobile iteration of the series, Pocket Camp, Nintendo says there will be some connection with the new game in the form of exclusive items. It’s not clear what those items will be, but it’s a nice bonus for Pocket Camp players.

Expect plenty of free updates

Nintendo didn’t mention anything about paid DLC or expansions, but the developer did say that there will be multiple free updates coming in the future. These will primarily revolve around seasonal events, and you won’t have to wait long for them: Nintendo says that the first free update will be out on launch day, priming the game for an event later in April.

There are... ghosts?

During one sequence, Nintendo showed how different your island can look at night. This included a glimpse at what looked to be a ghost — called a “wisp” — but it was an all too brief encounter.

Disappearing 'Find My Mobile' notification baffles Samsung Galaxy users - ABC News

Samsung said the "notification does not affect their devices in any way."

An unknown number of Samsung Galaxy users worldwide received a mysterious, disappearing push notification Thursday, sending the internet reeling.

The notification, which many Galaxy users on Twitter reported vanished after they clicked on it, read: "Find My Mobile" and "1."

A Samsung spokesperson told ABC News that the notification will not affect their phone in any way, though the cause was not disclosed.

"The notification was inadvertently sent to a limited number of Galaxy devices," the spokesperson told ABC News. "We can assure our users that this notification does not affect their devices in any way. We sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience this may have caused and will ensure that a similar incident doesn't occur in the future."

Samsung UK's Twitter handle responded to one person's Tweet, sharing some information to quell theories about what caused the notification that were brewing online, saying it was part of an "internal test."

"Recently, a notification about 'Find My Mobile 1' occurred on a limited number of Galaxy devices," the verified Twitter handle wrote.
