Sign up now to get a free 30-day trial of the service. It renews at $8 per month and includes over 300 channels.

Should you shop pre-Black Friday deals?

The answer here is not cut and dry, but in most cases we would say yes. You should absolutely already be shopping sales, and picking up things as you see them on sale. Many retailers have already dropped the Black Friday sale ads, so you can easily compare the pricing listed there to what it's available for right now. If the prices match, click buy now. There is no benefit to waiting for Black Friday and risking the item selling out or forgetting to purchase it, and being stuck then paying full price.

Will Black Friday bring lower prices?

You may or may not find lower pricing than you see right now on Black Friday itself. Retailers don't show off every single item that will be available at a discount and list the price ahead of the event, unfortunately, which means you have to take a risk. You'll need to weigh your options when shopping for some stuff, but keep in mind that making the purchase now is likely less stressful, and you won't have to worry about it selling out before you complete the transaction or missing out on the price you see.

Where should you look for Black Friday deals?

When it comes to Black Friday, just about everyone under the sun will be offering discounts. If you want to keep your searches under control, we'd recommend keeping an eye on Amazon's Black Friday offerings, along with deals at Best Buy and don't forget to check out Walmart during your pricing comparisons. These retailers offer a wide variety of product assortment, and will honestly all probably be price matching eachother during the lead up to Black Friday and on the big day.

Stadia Controller pairing process already live on Chromecast Ultra - 9to5Google

Wednesday’s Stadia AMA confirmed that you’d need to use the Chromecast Ultra included with Founder’s Edition on day one. Stadia Controller pairing this evening looks to already be available on existing streaming dongles.

According to Google this week, the bundled version of the Chromecast Ultra featured the “latest firmware” to play Stadia. That said, the company hopes to update existing devices “soon after launch” to let you play on any connected TV.

That appears to already be underway with several Chromecast Ultra owners (via Reddit) running version 1.42.172094 — the current stable — reporting that a Stadia Controller linking code is appearing on screen. It takes the form of a pill-shaped bubble that says “Stadia Controller” followed by various button presses.

For those that don’t use Stadia, the code can be disabled from the Google Home app under Ambient Mode settings. Until Stadia launches on Tuesday, it’s unclear whether game streaming already works with current Ultras or whether another firmware update is required.

Google this week fully detailed the on-screen and in-app process for linking a Stadia Controller:

  1. If you already have your Stadia account set up on your Chromecast Ultra, use the Stadia Controller to choose the Stadia account you want to log in with. If you have not yet your Stadia account set up with your Chromecast Ultra, continue through the rest of these steps.

  2. Use your controller to select “+” on the screen.

  3. On your mobile device, tap your avatar in the top right corner of the Stadia app.

  4. Tap Add account to Chromecast and then [your stadia account] and then Allow.

  5. Tap Done to finish setup, or tap Add a security pin to add a pin to your Stadia account.

Scathing Metacritic user reviews and #GameFreakLied dull the shine of Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield's release - Notebookcheck.net

Pokémon Sword and Shield are facing a user backlash. (Image source: Inverse)
Pokémon Sword and Shield are facing a user backlash. (Image source: Inverse)

The first user reviews for Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield have started being posted on Metacritic and it’s not looking good for the latest installments in the beloved franchise. At the time of writing, the user score stood at 3.5 for Sword and 3.4 for Shield. Discontent has already been visible on Twitter thanks to the trending hashtag #GameFreakLied.

by Daniel R Deakin, 2019/11/16

Recent critic reviews for Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield were reasonably good; both the Sword and Shield variants brandished scores of 81 on Metacritic and have received a fair share of glowing reports. But as is often the case, the critical opinion has not matched the user opinion. The current Metacritic user score for Pokémon Sword is 3.5 (based on 1,608 ratings) while Pokémon Shield is even more disliked on 3.4 (739 ratings). There are a number of reasons why the games have been met with such apparent user dissatisfaction.

A logical person might just go for the simplest conclusion here: Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield failed to deliver what hardcore fans wanted. Whereas critics seem more willing to accept the controversial changes (Pokédex refinement) and try to remain objective, gamers have no need to be so measured in their reviews. Browsing through the damning comments, it becomes clear to see that the biggest issues are the short story, a “rushed” feel to the games, substandard graphics, and crippling bugs (deletion of saved data). All of those problems and that’s without even mentioning the cut cast of characters.

The discord among Pokémon fans has been building ever since it was announced that hundreds of monsters would not appear in either Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield. Reasons for the cuts were given that initially seemed fair, but a growing wave of resentment has been made more visible online thanks to the #GameFreakLied tag that recently trended on Twitter. Perhaps one of the most pertinent criticisms was based on the graphics modeling, as it was claimed that the creation of completely new character models was a reason for slashing the Pokédex. However, many have accused developer Game Freak of simply reusing older models.

There will be some argument that, similar to many disgruntled members of the Star Wars fanbase that continue to lambast The Last Jedi (Rotten Tomatoes score: 91% critics, 44% audience), there are always going to be people who follow a particular franchise who will hate any kind of change. But, it seems many Metacritic user review writers have deliberately avoided basing their low scores on the Dexit controversy or from just being angry at Game Freak. At the moment, it simply appears that Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield are really just not much fun.

Razr to Galaxy Fold: The wows and woes of 2019's foldables - CNET

Motorola Razr

The Motorola Razr flip phone brings back the company's iconic brand from the 2000s.

Juan Garzon/CNET

The Container Yard stands in downtown LA, with graffiti and murals adorning the warehouse's red brick walls. On Wednesday, hundreds of reporters, influencers and even the DJ Diplo descended on this once-neglected part of Los Angeles to see the gadget du jour: Motorola's first foldable, the Razr

razr-reloaded-bug.png

Much like people avoided DTLA, they also shunned Motorola's phones. The company, which invented the cellphone, saw Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy devices blow right past it. Today, only about 3% of the smartphones sold in the world come from Motorola.

But downtown LA, while still gritty in some parts, has made a comeback. Now Motorola is hoping for a resurgence of its own, all thanks to its iconic Razr brand.

"This is a relaunch of the Razr brand,"  Motorola President Sergio Buniac said in an interview with CNET. "I don't see it as a silver bullet. We see it as a journey that's just started."

Now playing: Watch this: Motorola Razr: Reimagined for the future

2:58

The Razr caps off a really unexpected year for foldables -- and not necessarily unexpected in a good way. By February, foldable phones had captured everyone's attention. They were something never seen before, devices with expansive screens that actually can fold in half to become more compact. Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi showed off their designs, and essentially every other major handset maker was rumored to be working on a foldable. Even my non-tech-savvy parents in Iowa knew about the devices.

But then came the troubles: screen defects and lots of delays.

Samsung delayed the launch of its $1,980 Galaxy Fold by five months after some reporters found screen defects in their review units. Huawei pushed back the introduction of the Mate X by several months, to Nov. 15, blaming the slow rollout of the 5G networks in China that the device will run on. Xiaomi teased a foldable early this year but never actually launched it, and Microsoft opted to design a phone with two screens held together by a hinge instead of a device with a foldable display.

Motorola, too, delayed its Razr foldable from a planned summer launch. But now the company is finally ready to show the world what it's created.

The new Razr, unveiled Wednesday, is a reboot of Motorola's popular flip phone from the early 2000s. In the US, it's only available on Verizon's network. Presales for the the $1,500 device -- the cheapest foldable available so far -- begin Dec. 26, and it'll be available sometime in January in the US. Other markets will get the phone in 2020.

Motorola is banking on nostalgia to woo buyers, and it's counting on something else too: portability. The Razr is the first foldable that remains a compact phone size when expanded, instead of being a phone-tablet hybrid. When folded, the Razr's body measures 2.8 inches by 3.4 inches and sports a 2.7-inch Quick View display. When you open the device, the internal screen stretches to 6.2 inches, the same size as Samsung's Galaxy S9 Plus phone from last year.

Motorola's research showed "many consumers were looking for pocketability," Buniac said. "Let's fold inwards."

Is bigger really not better?

Foldable fits and starts

In early 2019, Samsung seemed poised to be the first major handset maker with a foldable phone on the market. It set late April as the launch date for its Galaxy Fold, which sports a 4.6-inch display when folded and a separate 7.3-inch display when unfolded into a tablet.

But the South Korean giant postponed the launch to September after several reporters discovered screen defects in their review units. Samsung spent months investigating what went wrong and tweaked the Fold's design to prevent the same problems in the future.

"During the past several months, our team has been refining the Galaxy Fold to ensure we can provide the best possible experience," Samsung said when relaunching the Fold. "We learned from the feedback we received, and not only applied those lessons to the Galaxy Fold's design, but also took the time to rethink the entire consumer experience from purchase to unboxing and post-purchase service."

Huawei also delayed the launch of its foldable, the Mate X, to Nov. 15 from a planned summer debut. The $2,400 phone, designed to run on super-fast 5G networks in China and other regions, made its first appearance at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February.

Unlike the Fold, which opens like a book to reveal a bendable screen on the inside, the Mate X has its foldable screen on the exterior. It needs to be opened only when you want to access the tablet-size display. Huawei executives said the delay was caused by the extra work to refine the device.

For now it's available only in China, and it won't run Google's services because Huawei was placed on a US watchlist as part of ongoing government scrutiny of its practices and its ties to the Chinese government.

Like the Galaxy Fold, the Mate X has raised questions about durability. Foldable displays today are made with plastic, which scratches easily. The main screen in Samsung's Fold is sheltered when it's closed, but CNET's initial review unit had scratches after only about a week of use. The Mate X's foldable screens are on the exterior of the device, which means they could easily become scuffed.

The devices, with their irregular display sizes, also require developers to specially tweak their apps to work. On the Fold, you can start using an app like Flipboard on the small front screen and then pick up where you left off when you open the device to the tablet side. But not all apps are optimized for the screen and work well.

timberwolf-2019-2678

Verizon will be the exclusive US carrier for the Razr.

Angela Lang/CNET

That's not the case with Motorola's device, since the outer "Quick View" screen just shows notifications.

"Samsung and Huawei have to work on how to fill the larger screen effectively," said IHS Markit analyst Gerrit Schneemann. "There's no question about the interface when the Razr is opened -- it's just a normal Android interface."

This year, companies likely will sell "well under" 1 million foldables, he said. Next year, the number should rise to about 4 million, he estimated.

"We're at the beginning of this form factor life cycle," Schneemann said. "So all these first-generation issues around display quality and performance, user interface and developer support, will get sorted out."

Moto's shot

Motorola has taken a different approach. Instead of creating a phone-tablet hybrid, it's made a flip phone-smartphone combination. The company hopes people will find the compact design attractive and more durable than the foldables from Samsung and Huawei.

Motorola created a unique "zero gap hinge" design for the Razr that allows the screen to lie flat when opened but then close in on itself. The device has space for the display to bend inward in a teardrop shape rather than a flat fold, and one of the screen's five layers is made of 360-micron-thick stainless steel to reinforce the display. As CNET's Jessica Dolcourt noted, the Razr snaps shut, something Samsung's Fold, with its big gap around the hinge in the middle of the display, can't do.

"We looked at the ways this could fail and would account for it," Tom Gitzinger, director and principle engineer of innovation and architecture for Motorola, told CNET.

Reviewers heralded the Fold as a glimpse into the future, but some noted that Samsung's first iteration of the device felt like a prototype. It didn't have the polish of a product really ready for consumers' hands. But Motorola's Razr feels more like a finished device, some said Wednesday. Dolcourt called the Razr "the best designed, most completely thought-out foldable phone to date."

Samsung is considering a similar design, which it teased at its developer conference last month. And TCL showed off prototypes of foldable flip phones at Mobile World Congress earlier this year.

Until those appear, Motorola has the foldable flip phone market cornered.

"With most smartphones looking near identical, this clamshell form factor provides a refreshing change and one that consumers looking to stand out from the crowd will welcome," said Dominic Sunnebo, director of consumer insights at Kantar.

But like parts of downtown LA, Motorola's Razr comeback is still a work in progress.

Apple removing all vaping apps from App Store this morning after 42 deaths - 9to5Mac

Apple is this morning removing all vaping apps from the App Store following yesterday’s CDC report that says that 42 people in the US have died from lung disease associated with e-cigarette use.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that there were a further 2,172 cases of severe respiratory illnesses among those who vaped either nicotine or cannabis products…

Update: More information at the bottom of the piece

NordVPN

Axios reports.

Amid growing health concerns over e-cigarettes, Apple will remove all 181 vaping-related apps from its mobile App Store this morning, Axios has learned […]

The company has never allowed the sale of vape cartridges directly from apps. But there were apps that let people control the temperature and lighting of their vape pens, and others provided vaping-related news, social networks and games.

Apple has been headed in this direction since June, when it stopped accepting new apps that promote vaping. Those who already have a vaping-related app on their iPhone will be able to continue using the app and install it on new devices […]

Apple in a statement to Axios: “We take great care to curate the App Store as a trusted place for customers, particularly youth, to download apps. We’re constantly evaluating apps, and consulting the latest evidence, to determine risks to users’ health and well-being.

Recently, experts ranging from the CDC to the American Heart Association have attributed a variety of lung injuries and fatalities to e-cigarette and vaping products, going so far as to call the spread of these devices a public health crisis and a youth epidemic.

We agree, and we’ve updated our App Store Review Guidelines to reflect that apps encouraging or facilitating the use of these products are not permitted. As of today, these apps are no longer available to download.”

The CDC report says that more work is needed to determine the specific causes and that people should consider refraining from all usage of e-cigarette or vaping products.

We understand that Apple was particularly concerned by data showing that more than five million children now use e-cigarettes. It is taking action under App Store review guideline 1.4.3:

Apps that encourage consumption of tobacco and vape products, illegal drugs, or excessive amounts of alcohol are not permitted on the App Store. Apps that encourage minors to consume any of these substances will be rejected. Facilitating the sale of marijuana, tobacco, or controlled substances (except for licensed pharmacies) isn’t allowed.

The American Heart Association has welcomed the move.

“We are grateful that Apple is joining with us and others on this historic day to stand against big Vape and their lies by removing all vaping apps in the App store,” said Nancy Brown, CEO American Heart Association.  “Our hope is that others will follow our lead and follow with their own powerful message that nicotine and nicotine addiction caused by e-cigarette use are leaving thousands sick and dying across the globe.”

Motorola Razr gets an update with foldable touchscreen display - Dezeen

Motorola has thrown its hat into the folding smartphone ring with a revamped version of its Razr flip phone that was first launched 15 years go.

The new model of the same name, which will launch in the US in January 2020, mimics the recognisable shape of the 2004 original with a cover that flips up to reveal the screen.

But instead of a keypad and 2.2 inch display, the inside is entirely made up of a continuous, 6.2 inch OLED touchscreen display.

Made of flexible plastic, the display bends in half without the visible seam that marks similar folding screens such as Huawei's Mate X and Samsung's Galaxy Fold, according to Motorola.

Powered by two small gears, this mechanism leaves little to no gap between the two halves of the screen when folded, to prevent debris and dust from entering.

Another feature that sets the Motorola apart from other models, is the fact that it folds horizontally rather than vertically, to roughly the same thickness as the original Razr at 14 millimetres.

It also transforms from a palm-sized devices into an average-sized smartphone, rather than opening from a regular phone into a tablet.

The exterior consists of stainless steel and glass, topped off with a smaller "Quick View Display" that can be used to show notifications, control music and take selfies with the front-facing camera.

Even the hallmark "chin" of the original Razr is kept, but kitted out with an additional fingerprint reader, four-speaker system and USB-C port.

Motorola has described the phone as "design-first" as evidenced by its mid-range six gigabyte RAM, 128 gigabyte storage and Snapdragon 710 chip.

Foldable screens have been dominating the smartphone world this year, with most major players sharing their take on the trend.

Beyond Samsung and Huawei's high-profile launches, Microsoft unveiled the two-screen Surface Duo – which can be opened like a book and used like a game controller – while Energizer debuted its Power Max P8100S, whose specs are "better than many people's laptops".
