Calvin Harris already has the new Mac Pro - Engadget

Sponsored Links

Chris Velazco/Engadget

Apple still won't say when the new Mac Pro will ship besides "this fall," but one of its early adopters might have hinted that it's getting close. DJ Calvin Harris has posted multiple Instagram Stories showing that he already has Apple's workstation as part of his music production setup. He didn't talk about it, to no one's surprise, but this suggests Apple is comfortable enough with the state of the Mac Pro to seed it to big-name creators.

The sighting came just days after Apple held a Final Cut Pro X summit where it teased "surprises from the Apple product team." It's not clear if that involved Mac Pro demos or news, but the timing is hard to ignore. The Mac Pro recently received FCC approval, so there's not much holding it back.

It wouldn't be shocking for Apple to do something like this. The new Mac Pro and matching Pro Display XDR are effectively Apple's mea culpa to the creative world. They're an acknowledgment that the 2013 Mac Pro and other decisions alienated professionals who thrive on desktops with ample expansion and easy-to-swap parts. If Apple is going to win those people back, it needs to show that the Mac Pro is viable in real-world situations -- including dance music studios.

Black Friday 2019 deals at Best Buy this weekend: All-time low prices on Apple Watch, HomePod and more - CNET

Black Friday is November 29 -- unless you're shopping at Best Buy, in which case it's now. The retailer has kicked off a huge early sale that includes some of the best deals we've seen of the season thus far. Best Buy is matching or setting the all-time lowest prices on the Apple Watch Series 4, this year's MacBook Air, Beats headphones and the HomePod smart speaker. But there are also killer deals to be had on Microsoft's new Surface Pro 7 and a bunch of other laptops, tablets, TVs and more.

Note that you need to be a member of the company's My Best Buy rewards program, the basic tier of which is free, to take advantage of some of these sale prices. Discounts are available online and in-store. The highlights -- which we continue to update and add to in real-time -- are as follows.

Note that most of these sale prices are good through Sunday, November 10, but some do sell out as the sale progresses.

Best Buy has also revealed its Black Friday ad, offering many specific products it's selling for the real Black Friday timeframe later this month.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Best Buy has Bose's SoundLink Revolve on sale for $120, which is the lowest price we've seen for it. This model is smaller than the SoundLink Revolve Plus, but it's a very good compact Bluetooth speaker. Read our Bose SoundLink Revolve review.

David Carnoy/CNET

Best Buy has the JLabs JBuds Air on sale for $30 through Sunday, Nov. 10. They normally retail for $50. JLabs makes a lot of true wireless earphones and this is its most affordable -- and frankly, the only one I'd buy. It's a decent set of true wireless earbuds that's a relative bargain at $30.

David Carnoy/CNET

We saw this deal last year but it's still a good one: Sony's micro Bluetooth speaker, the SRS-XB01, is on sale for $15 at Best Buy. Read our Sony SRS-XB01 review.

Sarah Tew/CNET

If you're less inclined to buy from Apple, Garmin's rugged fitness watches are great. The Fenix 5X cost $700 when it came out in 2017 -- now, Best Buy has it for $300. I've been using Garmin's lower-end Forerunner 245 and I like it a lot. The model on sale here includes all of its fitness tracking functions and adds an altimeter and barometer. Plus, you get topographic US maps, routable cycling maps for turn-by-turn navigation and a scratch-resistant sapphire lens. Read our Garmin Fenix 5X preview.

Ariel Nunez/CNET

Walmart has been selling these headphones for about $120 -- a massive $80 discount off the $200 list price. Now, Best Buy takes it a step further by cutting the price to $90. Read our Powerbeats3 review.

Sarah Tew/CNET

We love the UE Boom 2 -- a compact, durable wireless Bluetooth speaker that plays loud and sounds good. It's stain-resistant, shock-resistant and fully waterproof. Battery life is a strong 15 hours, and it can be paired with a second UE speaker for stereo sound. Read our UE Boom 2 review.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Sure, this entry-level configuration has lower-end components (Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM, 128GB SSD). But you're still getting the best Windows two-in-one tablet, with the Type Cover thrown in, for $600. This is a dynamite deal. Read our Surface Pro 7 preview.

More early deals available now through Sunday, Nov. 10

Straight from the company's press release, here are the current deals it's highlighting; some of these are already noted above:

  • Save $350 on 75-inch Samsung 4K UHD Smart TV with HDR (sale price: $749.99)
  • Save $70 on 65-inch Samsung 4K UHD Smart TV with HDR (sale price: $479.99)
  • Save up to $500 on iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro (with qualified activation and Trade-In)
  • Save up to $300 on select models of MacBook Pro
  • Save up to $300 on Apple Watch Series 4 (see all Apple Watch deals)
  • Save $200 on latest models of iMac or MacBook Air
  • Save $100 on Samsung 11.6-inch Chromebook (sale price: $89)

More sales will kick off on Thanksgiving Day

Best Buy stores are opening at 5 p.m. local time on Thanksgiving, with the company highlighting the deals listed below (again, straight from its press release). These will presumably be available online as well.

  • Save $350 on 70-inch Samsung 4K UHD Smart TV with HDR (sale price: $549.99)
  • Save $280 on 58-inch Insignia 4K UHD Smart TV with HDR Fire TV Edition with free Amazon Echo Dot (sale price: $199.99)
  • Save up to $250 on iPad Pro
  • Save up to $100 on iPad 10.2-inch
  • Save $400-$500 on the Note 10 Series (with qualified activation)
  • 20% off haircare for My Best Buy members
  • Save $80 on Google Nest Hello Video Doorbell (sale price: $149.99)
  • Save $1,000 on Hydrow Connected Rower (sale price: $1199)

Free next-day delivery on some items, free shipping on everything else

Feeling the heat from Amazon Prime, Best Buy is now adding free next-day delivery on "thousands of items" purchased on its website. And it's also offering free standard shipping on everything else through Christmas Day, with no membership or minimum purchase required.

Same-day delivery is also available for some online orders in dozens of US cities, too.

The full list of Black Friday sales are online, too

Can the iPhone 11 Pro replace a professional video camera? This test aims to find out - 9to5Mac

We’ve heard quite a bit about the iPhone 11 Pro’s camera quality, and seen it compared to high-end DSLRs and more. Now, CNET is putting the device to the test against professional video cameras, and challenging “award-winning filmmakers to shoot a film using only the iPhone 11 Pro.”

Ecobee HomeKit Thermostat

CNET challenged Carfection, its car-focused sister brand, to produce a video shot entirely with Apple’s newest device:

This wouldn’t be some quick, rough vlog mind you — Carfection has won numerous awards for its stunning cinematic style, incredible videography talent and high production value. I wanted to see how close the team could get to that same standard using just the iPhone.

Carfection accepted the challenge, and headed to the New Forest National Park in England to shoot a video fo the Ford Mustang Bullitt. The video was shot completely on an iPhone, using third-party lenses from Moment for some scenes, as well as stabilization gimbals and slider.

For comparison’s sake, Carfection usually shoots with “DSLRs like our Panasonic GH5 or even bigger cameras like our Sony FS7.”

Carfection producer Charlie Rose explained that the end result in terms of video quality is mixed. In “great lighting,” the footage looked “amazing,” he said. But in other scenarios, it becomes noticeable that the video was shot on an iPhone:

The car-to-car footage where the Mustang is driving behind our crew car, being filmed, for example; the dynamic range is incredible, considering it’s from a phone camera. But as soon as we started getting closer on some of the details, the noise in the shadows from the processing became more noticeable.

You also don’t get the same depth of field you’d be able to achieve with a big image sensor. That’s a big giveaway that what you’re looking at is shot on an iPhone. It’s difficult to get that cinematic look.

Rose did have quite a bit of praise for the Filmic Pro editing app on iOS:

Overall it’s impressive. The fact that on an iPhone, you can change up all your shooting settings — ISO, white balance, shutter speed, manual focussing — is amazing. I never would have expected to be able to do that kind of stuff on a phone. But it is fiddly to use.

Rose said that the experience overall was “impressive” and that the triple-camera setup of the iPhone 11 Pro provides a lot of “versatility.” When asked whether he would use the iPhone in his regular workflow, however, Rose said it would be more of a backup motion:

At the moment I can’t see us using it regularly on a shoot. I see it as a potential fallback if you had major equipment failures. It definitely can’t replace our higher-end cameras with bigger sensors. But I’m not sure that’ll ever be the case with a phone unless they introduced a huge sensor that gave that depth of field for video.

Watch the video from Carfection, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the process, below.

NASA unveils its first electric airplane - a work in progress - msnNOW

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., Nov 8 (Reuters) - NASA, most prominent for its many Florida-launched exploits into space, showcased an early version of its first all-electric experimental aircraft, the X-57 "Maxwell," on Friday at its lesser-known aeronautics lab in the California desert.

NASA test pilot Wayne Ringelberg trains in a flight simulator for NASA's first all-electric plane, the X-57 Maxwell, at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, California, U.S., November 8, 2019. REUTERS/Mike Blake© REUTERS/Mike Blake NASA test pilot Wayne Ringelberg trains in a flight simulator for NASA's first all-electric plane, the X-57 Maxwell, at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, California, U.S., November 8, 2019. REUTERS/Mike Blake

Adapted from a Italian-made Tecnam P2006T twin-engine propeller plane, the X-57 has been under development since 2015 and remains at least a year away from its first test flight in the skies over Edward Air Force Base.

But after attaching the two largest of 14 electric motors that will ultimately propel the plane - powered by specially designed lithium ion batteries - NASA deemed the Maxwell ready for its first public preview.

NASA also showed off a newly built simulator that allows engineers, and pilots, to get the feel of what it will be like to maneuver the finished version of the X-57 in flight, even as the plane remains under development.

The Maxwell is the latest in a proud line of experimental aircraft the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has developed over many decades for many purposes, including the bullet-shaped Bell X-1 that first broke the sound barrier and the X-15 rocket plane flown by Neil Armstrong before he joined the Apollo moon team.

The Maxwell will be the agency's first crewed X-plane to be developed in two decades.

While private companies have been developing all-electric planes and hover-craft for years, NASA's X-57 venture is aimed at designing and proving technology according to standards that commercial manufacturers can adapt for government certification.

Those will include standards for airworthiness and safety, as well as for energy efficiency and noise, Brent Cobleigh, a project manager for NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center at Edwards, about 100 miles (160 km) north of Los Angeles.

"We're focusing on things that can help the whole industry, not just one company," he told Reuters in an interview at the research center. "Our target right now is to fly this airplane in late 2020."

The final modification, or Mod IV, of the aircraft will feature narrower, lighter-weight wings fitted with a total of 14 electric engines - six smaller "lift" props along the leading edge of each wing, plus two larger "cruise" props at the tip of each wing.

The lift propellers will be activated for take-off and landings, but retract during the flight's cruise phase.

Because electric motor systems are more compact with fewer moving parts than internal-combustion engines, they are simpler to maintain and weigh much less, requiring less energy to fly, Cobleigh explained. They also are quieter that conventional engines.

One challenge is improving battery technology to store more energy to extend the plane's range, with faster re-charging.

Due to current battery limitations, the Maxwell's design is envisioned for use in short-haul flights as an air-taxi or commuter plane for a small number of passengers. (Additional reporting and writing Steve Gorman in Culver City, Calif.; Editing by Sandra Maler)

Nintendo Switch Black Friday 2019 Deals: Best Console And Accessory Deals So Far - GameSpot

The products discussed here were independently chosen by our editors. GameSpot may get a share of the revenue if you buy anything featured on our site.

It'll likely be a huge holiday season for the Nintendo Switch, namely because of the release of Pokemon Sword and Shield. Chances are, you have someone on your holiday shopping list who wants a Nintendo Switch or Switch Lite (or maybe that person is you). We're here to help you fulfill holiday wishes by rounding up all of the best Nintendo Switch console and accessory deals for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. And as more retailers release their Black Friday ads, we'll include the best discounts here.

Let's break the disappointing news right out of the gate. Judging by the early Black Friday ads we've seen, the Nintendo Switch won't be getting a nice discount or even a particularly amazing bundle this holiday season. Instead, Nintendo has provided retailers with the same Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Switch bundle from last Black Friday. And yes, it still includes the launch model Switch, not the updated Switch with better battery life that hit stores a few months back. While the Switch Lite is prominently featured in ads, so far it's just that: an ad for the $200 handheld-only Switch, with no discount to speak of.

That doesn't mean there won't be great deals on Switch accessories, though. In fact, we've already seen countless accessories featured in the various Black Friday ads that have dropped, and you can expect even more accessory deals as retailers like Walmart, Amazon, and GameStop release their Black Friday ads. And if Best Buy's ad is any indication, there will also be some seriously awesome Switch game deals.

Best Black Friday Nintendo Switch console deals

Nintendo Switch with free digital copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and screen protector | $300

This Switch bundle was offered in 2018, and on the surface, it's a pretty good deal. You get the Switch and an awesome game that regularly goes for around $50 these days. However, please note this isn't the updated Switch with better battery life; it's the launch model. If you love Mario Kart and aren't concerned about the longer battery life, this is a solid offer; otherwise, you may be better off just buying the newer model for the same price and waiting for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to go on sale. We're highlighting Best Buy's bundle here because the retailer is throwing in a screen protector, but expect this bundle to be available at most major retailers as it's an official Nintendo offer. Perhaps one smart retailer will throw in more than just a screen protector.

Nintendo Switch (new model) with carrying case and charging dock with $90 Kohl's Cash | $320 ($345)

If you're not eager to grab Nintendo's official bundle, we know Kohl's will have its own bundle that does, in fact, feature the updated Switch with better battery life. For $320, you'll get the Switch, a carrying case ($20 value), and the popular PowerA Joy-Con Charging Dock ($25 value). The real draw here is that you'll get $90 Kohl's Cash to spend in the weeks following Black Friday.

Best Black Friday Nintendo Switch accessory deals

Nintendo Switch Joy-Con (L/R) Neon Red/Blue or Gray | $60 ($80)

An extra pair of Joy-Con controllers normally sets you back $80, and even though you get "two" controllers, that's still pricey. Thankfully, Switch Joy-Cons will be on sale for $60 at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target this Black Friday. You can choose between neon red/blue or gray.

No Caption Provided

PowerA wired controllers | $15 ($25)

Like Joy-Cons, Switch Pro controllers are expensive, but there are some reasonable third-party options like PowerA's lineup of wired controllers. Using the same layout as the Pro controller but with a slightly smaller form factor, PowerA's wired controllers are pretty darn good and come in three awesome designs: Zelda, Super Mario, and a Pikachu-yellow Pokemon theme. All three will be discounted to $15 during Best Buy's Black Friday sale.

No Caption Provided

Poke Ball Plus | $20 ($50)

While the Poke Ball Plus initially launched as an alternative controller for Pokemon: Let's Go, it will also be compatible with Pokemon Sword and Shield, allowing you to "hold" one of your Pokemon and take it with you on the go (presumably to rack up experience points or earn extra items). However, it won't function as a controller for Pokemon Sword and Shield the same way it did for Pokemon: Let's Go. The Poke Ball Plus also comes with Mew, a mythical Pokemon that can be transferred into Pokemon: Let's Go. The accessory is normally $50, but all the major retailers will have it for $20 during Black Friday.

No Caption Provided

Nintendo Switch Elite Edition Starter Kit | $15 ($25)

If you're buying a Nintendo Switch this holiday season, you should be in the market for a case, too. This starter kit comes with a carrying case, USB-C cable, silicone Joy-Con covers, and a microfiber cleaning cloth. It'll be discounted to $15 at Best Buy.

No Caption Provided

Insignia Power Pack for Switch/Switch Lite | $12.50 ($25)

For those who like traveling with their Switch (and who doesn't?), a car charger is a great accessory to have. This Insignia pack comes with a car charger, a USB-C cable, and an extra AC adapter. Having a second AC adapter is handy, as you won't have to unplug your AC adapter from your dock every time you want to take your Switch on a trip.

Roku puts a remote on your wrist with new Apple Watch app - TechCrunch

The Roku remote is coming to your wrist. The company announced today the launch of an Apple Watch app that lets you control your Roku device, including Roku media players and select Roku TVs, with a tap — just like the Roku mobile app, but sized for your wrist.

Considered the limited screen real estate, the app is fairly robust in terms of its feature set.

In addition to the expected media controls — like the ability to play and pause what you’re watching –, the app also offers a home button, the select button (“OK”), a back button and directional arrows. And it includes a way to launch your favorite channels, which are organized in order of the most recently launched to make them easier to access. That way, if you always watch Netflix, you don’t have to scroll down to find it.

In addition, the tiny remote app includes voice search functionality. To activate, you just tap the voice icon, then say things like “Launch Hulu” or “search for comedies,” or even change sources, like “switch to HDMI 1” for your Roku TV, the company explains. This will work on Apple Watch versions 1 through 5.

And if you have a Roku Ultra or a Roku TV with the Remote Finder functionality which uses an audible chime to locate a lost remote control in the couch cushions, you can also use the Roku Apple Watch app to signal your Roku remote to start making a noise.

All these features will be familiar to anyone who has already used the Roku remote for smartphones, as the Apple Watch app is just a miniaturized version. The only thing it’s missing is the ability to stream The Roku Channels’ free movies, but obviously that’s not a feature you’ll want on your wristwatch. (I mean…right?)

To get the Roku Apple Watch app, you’ll need to download or update your Roku iOS app to the latest version (6.1.3), and the app will appear on your Watch as long as you haven’t disabled “Automatic App Install” in the Watch’s Settings.
