Facebook has apparently been busy designing new variants of its Portal video chatting devices. According to the company's Vice President of AR/VR, Andrew "Boz" Bosworth, Facebook plans to unveil new Portal models this fall. Bosworth has made the announcement on stage at the Code Conference in Phoenix, where he told the audience that the social network is releasing "new form factors" because "there's a whole new generation of hardware coming out." Facebook, he said, wants "to make sure that human connection, connection between two people, is a first-party experience" on a piece of hardware for the home.

The social network released the original model and its bigger sibling, the Portal+, in November 2018. They give avid Messenger users a way to make encrypted video chats using a smart camera that can follow them around while talking. Bosworth didn't elaborate on what he means by "new form factors" -- we'll just have to wait for the unveiling event to see what the models look like. In addition to revealing the new Portal models, Facebook is also expected made the original Portal and Portal+ available in Europe this fall.

Google Maps is testing a new safety feature for taxi passengers - The Verge

Google appears to be testing a new safety feature for Google Maps that will alert you if your car or taxi deviates from its route by more than 500 meters (0.3 miles). The feature was first spotted by XDA Developers, and it appears to be exclusive to India for now. “Off-route alerts” can be found within the “Stay safer” menu; the menu is accessible after you’ve selected your destination but before you enter navigation mode.

From the way Google labels the option, it’s clear that off-route alerts are meant to be a safety feature, acting as a warning sign if a taxi driver isn’t taking you directly to your destination for any reason. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to not take the specific route given to you by Google (such as unexpected congestion that the app is unaware of), but giving a passenger an early warning of any changes could still be very helpful. The feature will also no doubt be welcomed by anyone who has been ripped off by taxi drivers who take the long route while the passenger is traveling in an unfamiliar city.

It’s unclear how close the safety feature is to a full release or whether it will be globally available or specific to the Indian market. Just last week, Google introduced two India-specific Maps features: one gives better information about public transport and the other provides flood warnings in the country. We’ve contacted Google for more information and will update this piece with its response.

Keanu Reeves was 'breathtaking' at XBox's E3 event - CNN

With his scene-stealing role in the Netflix rom-com, "Always Be My Maybe," and the success of his latest "John Wick" film, Reeves is having a moment.
He made the internet's day Sunday by popping up at E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo -- billed as the world's top video game conference -- in Los Angeles.
Reeves was in the house in an official capacity. He's reportedly in the game, "Cyberpunk 2077," and was there to promote it for XBox.
During Reeves' remarks, YouTuber Peter Sark yelled, "You're breathtaking!" Reeves returned the compliment verbatim, then said we're all breathtaking.
For the record, Sark's outburst earned him a free copy of the game, according to a tweet from the official "Cyberpunk 2077" account.
Naturally, Twitter went wild over Reeves' appearance on stage and in the game.
"Keanu Reeves wont stop until he's infiltrated every aspect of our lives," one person tweeted.
Please let this come to pass.

Razer’s 'mental performance' drink probably won't quench its thirst - Engadget

Razer

Razer wants to tackle another part of the gaming experience -- namely, the drinks you need to keep your momentum going. It's introducing Respawn (no connection to that Respawn), a "mental performance" drink mix that's meant to keep your focus sharp for long periods. No, it's not a direct knock-off of its most conspicuous rival, G Fuel. You'll find a few familiar ingredients like choline and Vitamin B, and it's equally sugar-free, but there's none of the taurine and less caffeine (95mg versus 150mg). The Razer-owned brand doesn't want to risk the crash you get with energy drinks -- this is meant for those hours-long sessions where you don't want to slip.

To no one's surprise, it won't come cheap. You can buy Respawn in 20-pack boxes for $25 in flavors like Blue Raspberry, Green Apple, Pomegranate Watermelon and Tropical Pineapple. And if you want to flaunt your fondness for the brand by getting the official shaker cup? That's another $30 -- and no, there's no Chroma lighting to match your PC. Respawn is available now in the US through both Amazon and Razer's websie, so you at least won't have to wait to give it a try.

The introduction comes somewhat out of left field, even for a company known to broaden is horizons, but it's not shocking. Although Respawn is technically a stand-alone company, it could serve as a way to push the Razer brand in the gaming community. After all, numerous streamers (like DrDisRespect and Viss) have G Fuel sponsorships. This could put Razer in front of a similar number of eyeballs, even if they don't immediately associate it with Respawn. It'll also give Razer a side business that isn't as easily destabilized by the ups and downs of gaming hardware.
