Google Maps now highlights photos of restaurants' most popular dishes - Engadget

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Google Maps has long since shown crowdsourced photos of the dishes at listed restaurants, but a new tab will flag up the most popular choices with photos to match.

As spotted by Taylor Wimberley on Twitter and confirmed by several other users, the update adds a new tab to the Menu page on a restaurant's Maps listing called Popular Dishes:

The new feature seems to scan reviews of the restaurant to find commonly-mentioned dish names, then adds photos included with those reviews to the Popular tab. Whether this is done automatically or humans are involved is currently unclear, but a fully automated system would presumably make mistakes whereby someone's review mentioned one dish and the photo showed another. That said, Google does have extensive image-recognition tech (as seen in Google Photos, for instance) which could be used here.

9to5Google notes that while you can suggest edits to the information shown, as with anything on Maps, several dishes don't have names because the person posting them didn't include a caption. That's not so helpful when customers spot something delicious and want to order it, but they could always show the photo to the waitstaff.

The update to Maps has only been rolled out to some phones at the time of writing, and is most likely in testing. If it works well, we'll likely see it on the main Maps app before long, bringing Google Maps one step closer to its restaurant review rivals Yelp and TripAdvisor.

Pixel 3A leaks at Best Buy, confirming 6-inch screen for XL model - The Verge

The unannounced Google Pixel 3A XL has been spotted at a Best Buy in Springfield, Ohio. Android Police reports that both the “Purple-ish” and “Just Black” models of the phone were on display, and that their packaging confirms previous rumors that the Pixel 3A XL will have a 6-inch display. No pricing appeared to be visible for the handsets.

The sighting is the latest in a string of leaks about Google’s unannounced mid-range handsets. Earlier this week the YouTube channel This is Tech Today posted images of the retail packaging of the non-XL Pixel 3A, which confirmed that it would have a 5.6-inch screen. The video also claimed that the 64GB model of the Pixel 3A and the Pixel 3A XL would start at $399 and $479 respectively.

With less than a week to go until Google is expected to announce the new phones during its Google I/O keynote on May 7th, the Pixel 3A is running out of places to leak from. We’ve seen photographs, promotional images, videos, and renders, and it’s been spotted on Geekbench as well as Google’s own site. We’re not quite at the point that the Pixel 3 got to last year, where the phone had leaked so thoroughly that someone recognised it in a Lyft, but we’re getting very close.

Google Pixel 3a XL spotted at Best Buy ahead of launch - Engadget

Google's Pixel 3a XL has been spotted at a Springfield, Ohio Best Buy, removing any remaining mystery about what the search giant is about to announce. The handset was seen in its packaging by an Android Police tipster in plain view (but under glass) in both of the previously leaked colors, "Purple-ish" and "Just Black." The sighting all but confirms the imminent launch and availability of the device, expected to happen on May 7th at Google's I/O event.

Pixel 3

We've already seen images of the Pixel 3a in its notch-free, single rear camera glory (above). We also know that the 5.6-inch Pixel 3a and 6-inch 3a XL will likely have 2,160 x 1,080 and 2,220 x 1,080 displays and Snapdragon 670 and 710 processors, respectively, along with 4GB of RAM and the same Pixel Visual Core powering the cameras on current Pixel 3 devices. Even the prices have leaked out: $399 US for the regular 3a and $479 for the XL. Though the evidence is convincing, it's still not official -- so take all this info with a grain of salt.

If this particular leak sounds familiar, Engadget's Richard Lai spotted the original Pixel 3 XL in Hong Kong, and even got to borrow and play with it for a bit. Whoever saw the Pixel 3a XL didn't go that far, but it's likely that Best Buy would have blocked any sale if they had tried to buy it. In any case, it looks like you'll be able to buy Google's mid-range devices with a pure Android experience -- and probably a great camera -- shortly after they launch next week.

[Update: Inside retail box] Google Pixel 3a packaging leak corroborates ‘Purple-ish’ name, screen size, hints at pricing - 9to5Google

We’re just a week from Google I/O, and also the debut of the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL. Today, we’re getting a leak of the packaging for the Pixel 3a and it seems to corroborate a lot of details we extensively leaked about the device last month.

The best gifts for Android users

Courtesy of Brandon Lee who runs the YouTube channel This is Tech Today, we’ve got our first few pictures showing off the packaging for the smaller of Google’s new phones, the Pixel 3a.

First and foremost, today’s leak corroborates previously-reported specifications for the device. That includes the display being a 5.6-inch panel, supposed 64GB and 128GB storage tiers, and a display at 1080p resolution.

Brandon was also able to provide corroboration on a source of ours which mentioned the “Purple-ish” name noted on the Pixel 3a packaging in recent weeks. For that reason among others, we feel this packaging is indeed genuine. As noted in previous leaks, that colorway will have a yellow accent for the power button.

As has also been noted in past leaks, Lee’s source reiterates the use of downward firing speakers, a plastic build, and the return of the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Importantly, Lee also mentions that his source reveals the pricing for the Pixel 3a will start at $399. Meanwhile, the larger Pixel 3a XL will apparently cost $479.

Notably, we were also able to use the UPC on the packaging here to further confirm its legitimacy, as the “42776” code is used regularly with Google products, including the Pixel 3. The model number shown here also lines up with what we’ve previously found.

As mentioned, we detailed the Pixel 3a and 3a XL extensively in a report last month. The smaller device will have a 5.6-inch OLED display at 2220×1080, a Snapdragon 670, 4GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel wide-angle front shooter, and a 12-megapixel rear shooter. There’s also a 3,000mAh battery, Active Edge squeezable sides, the Titan M security chip, eSIM, and 18W fast charging via USB-C.

Update 5/3: In another video, Brandon’s source has shared more images of the Pixel 3a’s packaging. This time, we get a glimpse inside of the box to confirm what’s included. Interestingly, it looks like Google is ditching the included headphones that came with the standard Pixel 3. Thankfully, this device has a headphone jack to help make up for that.

We can also see the phone itself and the camera/bezel around the display. As you’d expect, it lines up perfectly with previous leaks of the device. Lee’s source also corroborated our source regarding wireless charging on the Pixel 3a – it’s gone.

'Mortal Kombat' and 'Super Mario Kart' join the Video Game Hall of Fame - Engadget

The Strong, Rochester, New York

Sorry, Half-Life fans, you'll have to wait at least another year to see the classic FPS make it into the World Video Game Hall of Fame. The National Museum of Play has announced this year's batch of inductees: Mortal Kombat, Super Mario Kart, Colossal Cave Adventure and Microsoft Windows Solitaire.

The latter was a nominee two years ago but failed to make the cut that time around. Along with Half-Life, the other games that just missed out this year were Asteroids, Call of Duty, Dance Dance Revolution, King's Quest, Metroid, Minecraft and Ms. Pac-Man -- all of which were finalists in 2018 as well.

The museum said all four inductees "significantly affected the video game industry, popular culture, and society in general." The Mortal Kombat and Super Mario Kart series are still going strong, with Mortal Kombat 11 dropping just last week, while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to thrive in sales charts and there's a Mario Kart mobile game set to arrive this summer. Solitaire helped countless office workers and students while away the time when they got bored with life (or Minesweeper), but you might be less familiar with Colossal Cave Adventure.

Despite its lack of polygons, the 1976 text-based adventure "still offered a fully-realized realm to explore, with treasures to find and puzzles to solve," according to the museum. That paved the way for "an entire genre of fantasy and adventure games, and it directly inspired other pioneering titles, such as Adventureland and Zork."

It's absolutely a worthy quartet of inductees. They join the likes of John Madden Football, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy VII, Sonic the Hedgehog, Grand Theft Auto III, The Legend of Zelda, The Oregon Trail, The Sims, Space Invaders, Doom, Pac-Man, Pong, Super Mario Bros., Tetris and World of Warcraft.
